This project began with the opportunity to work on a website for Akashi Kurihara, a scholar of Japanese literature. As the concept developed, a question emerged: what would it mean to visualize the poems featured in The Tales of Ise through a contemporary form of expression?
The Tales of Ise speaks of love, human relationships, and shifts in emotion—in a sense, the pop songs of its time. From that idea, we expanded the 23 poems selected by Kurihara beyond words into movement, light, time, and interaction, creating 23 WebGL-based visuals and designing the website itself as a single playlist of 23 tracks.
