House in Kamakura

(Info)

We took part in the renovation of an apartment in Kamakura, the first residential project undertaken by Oniki Design Studio.
Working with a team of creative specialists, Equal.studio developed the lighting and product design in response to the client’s desire to live in soft, natural light without relying too heavily on artificial illumination. To minimize the use of lighting while recreating the warmth of incandescent light, we selected tunable LED fixtures and worked closely with Oniki Design Studio to refine their placement so that the light sources themselves would remain as unobtrusive as possible. To complement the carefully selected materials throughout the interior, we also designed custom dimmer switches machined from solid aluminum. Inspired by the tactile controls of audio equipment, the knobs were designed to make adjusting the light feel almost like playing an instrument. By delicately tuning the artificial lighting to the changing natural light entering through the windows over the course of the day, we created a living environment in which natural and artificial light coexist in quiet harmony.
